Those who gave their lives from Yarm ______________________________________

DOUGHTY, John Lancelot. Pte 5870 1/4th W Riding.

Return to Yarm Roll Call

The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Killed in action 13 Aug 1916 aged 21. Son of David Doughty, a builder of Commondale House, West St, Yarm and Sarah his wife. He had enlisted at Stokesley while living in Yarm. Thiepval Memorial, France

Yarm1914 found David Spence Doughty and his son Henry Percival Doughty were local builders and appear to have built several houses on West Street including Commondale House, the castle and the model town hall. The Doughty name appears in references well into the C17th and you may find several gravestones in Egglescliffe parish church yard. John Lancelot Doughty was living in Commondale House in 1911 when he was 16 with his parents David aged 45 and Sarah also aged 45. Also living in the seven roomed house were his brother harry aged 20 and sister Hilda Alfreda aged 8, his grandfather Henry aged 74 and step grandmother Margaret aged 87. John was 21 years and 3 months when he signed up, giving West Gate, Yarm as his address on 10 December 1915. He travelled to France on 15 June 1916 and was killed 2 months later. Apart from 5870 he also carried regiment number 24538. His brother Henry Percival also signed up but returned from France suffering from trench fever.
